This weekend is going to get pretty interesting in Adelaide

Adelaide will be holding their second CSTS event on Saturday 8th October. This year they’ve been lucky enough to have donated space so will be showing Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog as well as holding a raffle and cosplay competition then finishing off with the BDM.

Organiser Emma says “The very generous people at the Palace Nova cinema in the middle of the city have donated a screen to our event so we were able to get the approval to show Dr Horrible fairly easily. We’re going to be handing out interactive bags to all the Browncoats on the day – we’ve billed it as Joss Whedon meets Rocky Horror and we’re very confident that it will be a lot of fun!”

“We have some amazing raffle prizes thanks to some awesome donations from bigger organisations such as Supanova and Oz Comic Con down to individual Browncoats who have offered personal items or things they have created themselves, like the awesome Serenity cufflinks made by Get Your Geek On.”… Read more…

The California Browncoats are going back to Serenity Valley this weekend

Grab your grenades Browncoats because on the 17th of September the California Browncoats are going back to Serenity Valley!

Organiser Susie says “We are excited to announce that CSTS-LA will feature Francis Hamada’s epic fan film Browncoats: Independence War, a prequel to Firefly and Serenity.

We are going non-traditional (you might even say Independent-like) by showing this film for Can’t Stop the Serenity, but we believe in this movie and want to give Browncoats a taste of a whole new chapter in the ‘verse (unofficial).”

The film is set in the year 2511 in the Valley of Serenity on the distant Planet Hera, and rebel fighters aka “the Independence Army”, intent on secession, are fighting their last skirmishes against the superior and well-supplied Alliance Forces. Experience the drama and sacrifice of the battle of Serenity for the first time as seen through the eyes of the brave men and women of the 5th Battalion of the 76 Combat Brigade.… Read more…

Jing tsai! A Serenity poster signed by Joss Whedon up for grabs in Melbourne

New Melbourne Browncoats (NMB) are back for their 11th Can’t Stop the Serenity Screening event on Saturday 13th August but it may be the last.

Organiser Christopher explains “The NMB team has been working tirelessly over the years to bring this event to life, but attendance has been waning in the past few years. And this year, ticket sales are lower than ever. So if you’ve been meaning to attend our CSTS screening and have been thinking “well, there’s always next year”, then now is the time to get on board. We’d really like to go out on a high, and not only break even (cost wise) but make a significant donation to our two chosen charities – Equality Now and WIRE.“

WIRE stands for Women’s Information and Referral Exchange and women across Victoria (Australia) contact WIRE for support, information and referrals on issues, such as family relationships and legal issues, domestic/family violence, homelessness and mental health issues.… Read more…

Sending a wave to Fairfax, Virginia

The Browncoats in Fairfax are back at the Arlington draft house for this year’s Can’t Stop the Serenity event. Their event runs from 2.30pm until 5.30pm on Saturday 13th August and features some awesome raffle prizes plus the Big Damn Movie all in a venue with food and beer on tap! This does mean that Browncoats under 21 will need to be accompanied by an adult of course…..

They’re also running a costume contest where you can dress as anyone from the Whedonverse. The two characters that receive the most votes will battle it out for an enviable prize in a heads up trivia competition.

Organiser Ray explains “There are five levels of tickets available at https://cant-stop-serenity-dc.ticketleap.com/csts/ ranging from $10 to $100. The different levels include various bonuses such as additional general raffle tickets or entry into an additional exclusive raffle for an autographed action figure available only to Captain Tight Pants’ level viewers.”… Read more…

Shiny success in Salt Lake City

The Utah Browncoats have held CSTS events since the very beginning. Some large, some small, but all of them filled with great people who love to make a difference. Their most recent CSTS was no different in that respect, but they did do things a bit differently this year in that they split the event between two different venues.

With 110 Browncoats in attendance, the event started at Brewvies Cinema Pub with musical singalongs of the Hero of Canton and the Firefly theme. They were also able to have a small Easter egg video from Done the Impossible with a short introduction by Brian Wiser and they replayed the introduction video from 2015 because the end clip with Joss Whedon had not been shown at that year’s event.… Read more…

The 2015 Intro Video

For years CSTS has created an intro video to be shown before showing Serenity. We know it is shown at other times of course – during affiliate events for instance. But it is just for those participating in some kind of CSTS event.

And it has always been a nice surprise for event go-ers.
Who will be on it this year?
What will be the theme?
Will it make us laugh, or (one notable year), cry?

When the event season is over, we put it up on our You Tube channel for all to see.

We would like to extend a big thanks to those Browncoats who got us the footage, and to the event cities who sent in something extra for our 10th year. And a very big thanks to Liam Merrick who once again put this together into something that looks magnificent on a big screen.… Read more…

Happy Birthday Joss!

This is a special day, even a special week for those of us who love Firefly/Serenity and all of Joss Whedon’s other creations. The Man himself turns 50 today, June 23. Ten years ago a select number of cities got to see Serenity for the first time on Joss’s birthday. It was a gift to us from him.

Then it became our turn.

Over the last 9 years Can’t Stop The Serenity has raised over $900,000 for charities especially for one near to Joss’s heart – Equality Now. But we aren’t the only ones marking this special occasion. With the hashtag #ThankJoss, Kiba Rika who runs the website JossisaHottie.com, is asking people to tell the world how Joss Whedon changed their life for the better. Check it out on twitter.Read more…

Why “Can’t Stop the Serenity?” Part II

In Sept, 2013, birdandbear wrote about the North Texas screening but she speaks for all of us. Thanks to her for giving us permission to reprint this from their website.

Wanna hear something as mind-blowing as it is inspirational as it is humbling?

2013 marked the eighth annual CSTS event season. In that time North Texas Browncoats have raised more than $41,000.00, and the global events have raised over $840,000.00 for Equality Now and other charities. If the global events don’t break $1,000,000 next year, they certainly will for the 10th anniversary in 2015.

The stunning thing is, those figures aren’t subsidized in any way. There are no grants, no paid employees, no PR machine. Just some generous sponsors, and folks across the world coming together once a year to watch a movie, have a good time, maybe don a cunning hat, and make a stand in the name of what’s right.
