Why JL Hilton Supports CSTS

I organized the first Raleigh screening in 2006, because I loved Firefly. I loved it with all my heart and soul, in a way I’d never loved any TV show before. At the time, I didn’t expect to raise money for Equality Now. I expected to pay hundreds of dollars for the venue rental and movie rights out of my own pocket, to sit in a theater with maybe twelve other people and watch Serenity on the big damn screen again.

Instead, the 200-seat theater sold out. We had a costume contest, and several people actually showed up in costume. People bought raffle tickets. A donation was made to Equality Now. And I made new friends who have become like family.

Over the years, I learned more about Equality Now, and I found out about Kids Need to Read.… Read more…

A Word from our Sponsors: Why We Support CSTS

This is the first in a series from our sponsors. We asked them why, year after year, they support Can’t Stop the Serenity & Equality Now.

First up, one of our Lifetime Sponsors, Andy Gore, CEO of Quantum Mechanix:

“We all got on this boat for the same reason: To make awesome stuff for the greatest TV show ever and to serve the community of Browncoats (to which we belong).

Some folks said we were crazy to put all that love into a show that only lived half a season. But we didn’t listen, because miracles happen only when you push ahead against the odds. And maybe only when you’re crazy. But gorammit, if it didn’t work. So here we are, seven years later, still honoring Firefly the best way we can and loving every minute of it.… Read more…

Equality Now’s “When I Speak”

When I Speak was performed at Equality Now’s 20th Anniversary Celebration. It was written by Joss Whedon and performed by three young women who embody just one of the many struggles women and girls face everyday in countries around the world.

It is a stark and moving reminder of why Can’t Stop The Serenity supports Equality Now.

First memories of Firefly – Part II

Here are a couple more of the entries we had when we ran a contest in March. We asked people what their first memory of Firefly was.

Anna wrote:

If you want to be technical, It was a Saturday morning, a long time ago. I was watching cartoons, and an ad came on. There was a girl, fighting, guns. Serenity, the movie was called. I thought that was weird. Then my show came back on, and I forgot all about it.

It was years later that I first heard of Firefly, sitting in a religion class, before school started. A classmate quoted something, and the teacher laughed. The classmate, a boy named Kory, was knitting something, a hat. Red and gold, orange. My teacher called it a “Jane” hat, whatever that was.

Equality Now 20th Anniversary Auction On Now

Want to have dinner with Joss in London or LA? Bid on it. The LA dinner comes with a signed Buffy crew sweatshirt. Maybe you’d like to go with three friends to the New York premiere of The Avengers. That auction is over April 20th as the premiere is April 28th.

Today a slate from the Avengers, signed by the cast, was added. Or if you want to freak out guests to your home, you will want the Alien Egg prop from Alien Resurrection.

First Memories of Firefly – Part I

Here are a couple of entries to the contest we ran in March asking people what their first memory of Firefly was.

First, from Randy of North Carolina:

I was a church pastor trying to decide which movie our youth group should see. The other counselor said, “Take the kids to Serenity, it is like Star Trek.” That was good enough for me, so we went to see this unknown movie. The memory stuck with me and I really liked the movie. About 6 months or so later I was at Best Buy looking at DVD covers. There was Serenity! I bought it and watched it at home. Looking at the special features was the first time I heard of Firefly the series. I immediately found it and bought it.

And the Winner of the Firefly 10th Anniversary Contest is….

Congratulations Laurenon your winning entry. Thanks to the generosity of the New Melbourne Browncoats, she has won a copy of Firefly:The Official Companion, Vol I.

My first memory of Firefly…

I love Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Battlestar Galactica, etc. etc…. but honestly, I started watching Firefly to impress a guy. He was a dreamy Nathan Fillion lookalike, and I knew he was into the series. I really wanted us to have something to talk about.

I didn’t expect to love Firefly, but I did.

I annihilated the entire series in about a week, some eps multiple times.

Words have the Power to bring about Equality

Last year, Can’t Stop the Serenity joined up with Kids Need to Read to give you the chance to win some fabulous prizes in our first ever “Words have the Power to bring about Equality” Writing Contest. We’re now very excited to share the winning entry, penned by Stephanie Downes. Thank you to everyone who entered, and congratulations to Stephanie!

Equality. Sort of rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? Try saying it. Really try to get your tongue wrapped around those four syllables. Equality. Hmm, it’s a lovely word, like love, or celery. Filled with pleasant harmonics quite regardless of the meaning. Phonaesthetics probably dictate it to be absolutely hideous, but it’s got a quite lovely little tone to it. It’s a pity more people can’t say it and mean it, really; they’re missing out on a phrase to rival “cellar door” in euphony.

End of an era – Farewell to US 35mm prints of Serenity

With a heavy heart, we say a fond farewell to the much loved (and well used) 35mm prints of Serenity in the US.

Can’t Stop The Serenity has  learned that Universal is no longer sending out prints of Serenity to US venues. Universal has been extremely generous to CSTS in keeping 35mm prints of Serenity around for as long as they have, but we knew it couldn’t be forever.
Serenity Film Strip
With the rise in digital formats and the cost of maintaining 35mm projection equipment, many venues have been making the switch to the new DCP (Digital Cinema Package). As a result, our beloved 35mm prints have been retired. Some may say that the prints have been showing their age recently, but it’s still very sad to see them go.… Read more…
