Joss Whedon brings people together in Toronto

Toronto’s CSTS event will be on Saturday 9th July at the Royal Cinema in Toronto.

They’re keeping it simple with a screening of the Big Damn movie followed by an auction and the money they raise will be split between Equality Now and the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape (TRCC/MWAR).

TRCC/MWAR is a non-profit feminist organisation committed to fighting violence against women and children. They work both independently and together with other community organizations to provide support services for all survivors of sexual violence, sexual harassment, human trafficking and other forms of gender based violence.

And the Big Damn Heroes putting this together are Sarah, Jason, Wendy and Melissa.

Sarah is a cat groomer and nerd vivant. She enjoys geeking out over something she loves while supporting a good cause, and has been a long-time CSTS attendee in Toronto. She’s excited to be helping the CSTS tradition continue in her city.

Jason is active in geek interests, connection, and social media. Passing the days as a software trainer, also part-time social media teacher, sometimes karaoke host: basically he’s always in to something. The Whedonverse has allowed him to connect with fellow fans and friends alike, whether it’s freaking out at the premiere of “Much Ado About Nothing” when Joss walked by, or singing along with a roomful of friends to “Once More With Feeling” at karaoke night. Whedon brings people together, so naturally he wants to be a part of keeping the CSTS tradition alive in Toronto.

Wendy began as a feminist/social justice activist and volunteer in her teens and hasn’t stopped since. The Whedonverse called to her and she answered, and answered with vigor. (She likes other movies too.) During the day, she helps people learn at a technology company. In her copious free time, Wendy’s a singer in a rock and roll band full of people who remember the eighties really well. She likes to think she’s a Kaylee.

Melissa is a writer, podcaster and social media marketer. When not watching or writing about television, she enjoys travelling to pop culture events. She attended her first CSTS screening a decade ago and is excited to now be a part of the Toronto CSTS team.
