There are three shiny screening shindigs happening in North America this weekend.
We are so happy to welcome another new city to the Can’t Stop the Serenity fold when Surrey BC hosts its first event at Kwantlen Polytechnic University this Friday night. And what an event it’s shaping up to be! Along with screening Serenity and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog*, there will be music interludes, a silent auction, door prizes, merchandise for sale and refreshments. Some of the shiny up for auction include Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse season one dvd set signed by Felicia Day and Patton Oswald, a “Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh” poster signed by Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes and Jennifer Schwalbach, and a limited edition Serenity comic signed by none other than the Captain himself, Nathan Fillion.
What makes this event special is it features a talk by Mariam Nasrri, a Kwantlen University student from Afghanistan who is making a documentary about her and other women’s experiences. Mariam will talk about emigrating from Afghanistan and her trips back to the area to rescue women and girls in threatening situations, demonstrating how important the work of Equality Now is.
Tickets are $15 for general admittance and $10 for current KPU students and can be purchased on their website. As an incentive to buy yours early, the first 50 purchasers go into the draw to win a box of geeky goodness valued at over $75. To see its contents, photos of the auction items and event updates visit their website or Facebook page. All proceeds go to Equality Now and The Surrey Women’s Centre.
On Saturday Can’t Stop the Serenity takes over the San Francisco Bay Area with a screening event in Alameda. The doors of the Michaan’s Alameda Point Theater open at 1pm with Serenity scheduled to rise again on the big screen at 2.30pm. Ariyana L Kylstram will be mcing the pre-movie entertainment and costume contest, the winner of which will receive a double pass to the Halloween Gaskell Ball. There will also be prize drawings.
There are two pricing levels, a general admission ticket for $18 or if you want a shinier experience there’s a VIP ticket for $50 which gets you priority seating and a gift bag. You can purchase tickets online here and for more information visit their Facebook page. All proceeds go to Equality Now.
Also on Saturday, Tucson return to celebrate their tenth year holding CSTS events! They’re returning to the beautiful and historic Fox Tucson Theatre where the doors open at 5pm for an evening of Browncoat fun and Serenity on the big screen. Go as your favourite Whedon-themed character to enter the costume contest and have your photo taken in the photo booth. Make sure you bring plenty of cashy money for the raffle and merchandise on sale.
Tickets are $12 each and can currently be purchased online from the Fox Tucson Theatre website. For more event info please visit their website. All proceeds go to Equality Now and The Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona.
